Anearobic
Bacteria Living Between The Teeth
If the total surface area of tissue
and gums that wrap around teeth were laid out, it would amount to
approximately 9 square inches. Now, imagine a red, bleeding rash about 9
square inches on the forearm. Something of that magnitude would probably
warrant a call to the doctor. When
present in the mouth, the affliction is periodontal disease.
The bacteria that cause periodontal
disease and tooth decay are breeding right now in the cozy, moist, acidic
environment of the mouth. 80% of all adults have had some degree of
periodontal disease, which is also linked as a potential contributing
factor to other problems including heart disease, respiratory infections,
diabetes and low birth weights.
The areas between the teeth are
particularly good breeding grounds because the bacteria are anaerobic
(thrive in the absence of oxygen). Vigorous brushing doesn’t get in
between teeth but can over abrade gums and cause ridges on teeth, further
creating sensitivity to hot and cold or sweets. Studies show that
flossing only removes 18-35% of plaque. Oral irrigators can’t cut through
the greasy film that is produced by the bacteria.
According to tests at a Michigan Dental School,
a home cleaning appliance called Dental Air Force removes 62% more plaque
between teeth than the electric toothbrush. It is approved for marketing
by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to replace both tooth brushing
and flossing. Invented by a dentist, Dental Air Force uses a precision
jet of air, water, and dental cleaner to remove plaque from all surfaces
including in between teeth, and along the gum line.
The dental cleaner neutralizes the
acids and works with the system’s aerating properties, to change the
environment between the teeth to one that is not favorable to the
anaerobic bacteria. The system is especially effective on hard-to-reach
areas such as crowns, bridges, implants and orthodontic appliances. For
those with periodontal disease, this is an ideal home maintenance tool.
